Learning About the Environment is Fun!

SDGs: Quality education, Climate action, Parternships for the goals
I am passionate about environmental action and education. I have been serving as the chairperson of the Ministry of Environment's National Environmental Education Center Youth Council since 2020, monitoring environmental education-related policies and resources for Korean schools. In doing so, I realized that there is a lack of environmental education resources for the English-speaking population in South Korea despite the fact that South Korea is one of the most globalized countries in the world. I also attend an international school, and looking back, I thought it would have been really helpful to have an educational resource specialized in environmental topics in my country. Thus, as a personal project, I created an interactive English booklet on the environment specifically for elementary school students in South Korea.
I learned how to engage young audiences and did intensive research to prepare the content. Once my draft was edited and revised after a series of self-evaluations and feedback, I printed copies of my booklet and contacted schools to request a display or distribution. By using my social network, I was able to get my booklet shared in 19 international schools in the country. To expand impact, I uploaded an online version on my non-profit organization Greener is Cleaner’s website, which receives over a thousand visitors every month. On top of that, I visited classrooms and schools to verbally introduce my project.
I plan to launch another booklet but one that focuses more on community engagement for aspiring environmental activists, community mobilizers, etc. I want to share my personal experience as a youth environmental activist and make it a go-to reference for anyone interested in engaging deeply with environmental activism.
