Happy Feet: Promoting Sustainability and Responsibility
By: Katherine and Kayla of KIS (Korea International School)
SDGs: Sustainable cities and communities, Responsible consumption and production, Climate action
Topics like the environment and sustainability are broad, and it’s easy to get lost in the many interconnected aspects that impact the health of our planet. From climate change to conservation efforts, educating oneself on these complex issues and solutions can, at times, be discouraging. Happy Feet is dedicated to focusing on practical and plausible ways communities can contribute to sustainability. Our mission is to encourage individuals to adopt sustainable practices, reduce waste, and build educational environments to spread awareness.
Starting in 2022, Happy Feet has contributed to and led various initiatives inside and outside our school community. We’ve continuously made an effort to create environments where students and individuals feel encouraged to learn and participate in our projects. Small or large, we pride ourselves on the impact our projects have had and the impacts we are striving to make.
Happy Feet first started with plogging, where we picked up trash in various locations and communities in South Korea. This was a simple way that we could contribute to our community and spread awareness of the importance of mindful consumption of items. As we continued to plog, we wanted to involve more individuals and make a lasting impact on others. This led to our involvement within school communities -- engaging high, middle, and elementary school students. So far, we’ve led workshops for students of 12 schools, organized an Eco-Symposium, led plogging events for students at KIS, and distributed newsletters to various communities.
We hope to continue to make lasting impacts on our community and encourage others to make a difference as well. Check out our website and Instagram for more information!
