Social Justice Association: A New Chapter
By: Mia and Yejin of KIS
SDGs: Gender equality, Reduced inequalities, Peace justice and strong institutions
In August of 2023, Yejin and I joined the Social Justice League, a club at KIS that advocated on behalf of social issues. The experience of being able to participate in making changes towards serious issues was rewarding and insightful. However, the club came to a close, leaving both of us conflicted on what our next chapter would be. That was when SJA began.
In creating the organization, we agreed that our main focus would be making impactful and achievable changes that could be accomplished in our small group of five. Finding goals that were attainable seemed difficult amongst our endless ideas and dreams for the organization. However, this past semester we proudly reflect on two main projects we organized.
Firstly, the pad drive. Our media coordinators worked hard to find noticeable and meaningful ways to publicize the drive in hopes of getting our entire school community involved. The results were a huge success. Within the span of two weeks, we collected over 2000 menstrual products for women in need and donated them all to the G Foundation, our primary partnership. We felt it was so important to touch on period poverty as our very first social issue as it is one that we hold close to our hearts having previously worked around this issue in SJL. The impact was incredible, and we thank all who stepped up to put others needs before their own.
Second, our magazine. For the second half of the semester, we worked on creating an issue focused on the glass ceiling effect, which is gender inequality in the workplace. As our head journalist, Yejin and I got to work on creating an article that helps to raise awareness on this overlooked issue. We worked closely with other clubs at our school to produce a virtual art gallery that included a piece of work from NAHS, while also conducting two main interviews with girls who we find inspiring and impactful through the things they have accomplished. We appreciate all who have looked at our magazine as its a great way to fully appreciate the depth of the issue and grasp onto its importance.
This next semester and for years to come we hope to continue making changes for the better of our school community and South Korea as a whole. Make sure to check out our website for more information on the Social Justice Assocation.
