Shrewsbury Junior Ambassadors Painting Project
By: Shrewsbury Junior Ambassadors of Shrewsbury Riverside Bangkok
SDGs: Quality education, Reduced inequalities, Parternships for the goals
Who are we?
We are the Junior Ambassadors, a group of Y4 and Y5 students from Shrewsbury Riverside Bangkok. We focus on anything in the Junior school involving sustainability, global citizenship and service. This is a snapshot into our most recent project, which involved 50 children, took 4 months to complete and was a lot of fun!
First ideas…
Our project started when we went on a visit to the Thai Muslim School. This is a school near ours which gives free education to children in the community and runs after school activities too. Our school has worked with them for many years and we wanted to find out some new ways that we could get involved.
We travelled there to look around and meet the teachers. We had a tour and noticed a lot of the walls were quite worn out and the paint was falling off. We discussed whether they would like some help painting and decorating the classrooms and corridors of the school and found out about designs their children would like.
The next step!
Once we had our project idea, we had to come up with ways to fundraise to buy paints, brushes and whatever else we needed. We had so many different fundraising ideas! A bake sale? A homemade toy shop? But best of all was a mini-movie theatre event. We wanted something that would have maximum impact and get lots of attention from our students, and this was it!
We ran our lunchtime movies for 3 days and created posters and videos to promote them. We also designed tickets with information about our project. We charged 20 Baht (which is only a small amount of money) to view the movie each day. We charged so little because we wanted as many people to come as possible to create awareness of what we were doing.
It was a hit!
Every single lunchtime movie was so busy and we managed to raise more than 12,000 baht (that’s 200 students per day on average). This would be more than enough money to buy everything we needed for our project.
Building the perfect team!
The next step would be building a team of students with the passion and skills to help us! We made announcements in assembly, created videos to send to teachers and put posters around our school.
We carefully selected students using an application form to find people who were passionate about SDGs, service and also good artists. Once we had our team, we invited them to a briefing to share the info and discuss what we wanted to achieve. We were very happy because all of them were very enthusiastic!
Project Day!
The day of the painting project was really tiring and hot but something totally new too for all of us students! We painted all of the walls in white so that the background was fresh, then drew stencils on in pencil to make sure it was neat. In the end we were able to succeed and complete our paintings beautifully.
Overall, we managed to involve 46 students from Junior School and 18 Senior volunteers, on painting day. This is our first big project but it won’t be our last because we all feel motivated and pleased that we opened our
Final reflections.
To finish our project, we reflected on everything we did as a whole by doing a SWOT analysis. This was useful in helping us think of any further opportunities. We also wrote messages to the Thai Muslim School to ask for any feedback from them. We wanted to know that our work had a positive impact.
We all agreed it went well and felt really proud about what we had done! Thanks for reading!
